Just before departing, they realised that one of the blades of the motor fan was missing, making the journey all the more risky. Fellow passengers who were desperate agreed to the journey, while the father and husband was distraught over the repercussions of a semi functioning small boat that was being filled seven times its capacity. The family's options oscillated between being left behind and being sent back to a refugee camp in Turkey or consenting to the sea journey. As with most who pay large amounts - often times their life savings - they were completely trapped at the mercy of the smuggler. So Altaf decided to get on the boat with his family.
